Christmas Spirit Recipe Set

Much of the time, I begin a project with an eye toward the end result. I may have a plan in mind, but materials sometimes create a detour. Such was the case with this recipe album. As usual, my dollar store had several styles of photo albums to choose from, but I particularly liked this one, a ring binder with a linen-like cover. I decided to embrace the imperfections and see where they would lead. The result may not be what I first intended, but I love the effect. Another case in which experimentation was half the fun.

After completing the recipe album, I decided that a mini clipboard would be a perfect match. While I was fortunate to find a bargain at the local dollar store, similar mugs are readily available in craft stores as well as specialty shops. This is a project that is easily adaptable to any occasion or skill level with guaranteed satisfaction by the recipient.

The October 2011 issue of Crafts 'n things offers an abundance of inspiring techniques to fill your autumn days. As a child, each Halloween we enjoyed making a "lantern" from black construction paper by folding the paper in half lengthwise and cutting from the center out. Those memories inspired this windowed lantern, a perfect holder for these seasonal ATCs.

Steampunk Treasures

I felt like I'd found buried treasure when I discovered this faux leather backgammon set at the thrift store for only $1.00. I knew that I wanted to use steampunk images to decorate the exterior, but the brown surface had to go. Thus began my experiment with materials that generally are not compatible with a synthetic surface, but perseverance and a light hand created the results I was seeking. I love finding inspiration at a bargain price. Here are the results.

I love the Oxford Impressions stamps: The Deep, Steampunk Works, and Steampunk Elements. This was a simple transformation with Claudine Hellmuth Studio products, Tim Holtz™ Adirondack® Color Wash, and Archival™ ink. Steampunk Bird Tag

The absurdity of steampunk is one of the things that makes use of the images fascinating. Only the imagination can limit the possibilities. Where else could you find a mechanical bird wearing a top hat?

ATCs Beyond Trading: Celebrating the 4th

Have you seen the silhouette image of three children marching in what looks like an improvised parade? If so, you may understand why a red plastic tambourine reminds me of a July 4th celebration. I've seen the image on July 4th T-shirts, and it's always reminded me of childhood days when I marched in the kindergarten "rhythm band." In an era of electronic gadgetry, it may be difficult to imagine the pleasure that children derived in playing simple instruments such as a triangle or wooden blocks and the coveted noisemaker that led our "parades," the tambourine.

The tambourine will always signify celebration in my mind, a perfect backdrop for this ATC featured on pages 82 - 83 in the August 2011 issue of Crafts 'n things. It celebrates the "Strength of America" that is found "in the hearts and souls of its people." (Strength of America stamp from Art Impressions; flag stamp from Rubber Monger)

This artist trading card provides further reminder of the roots of our nation. It brought a little smile to my face to use the Top Hat image from the English PaperArtsy™ company to represent our forefathers.

30 Minute Card: Inspiring Butterfly

Subtle is not a word that I would normally use to describe my stamping style, but the subtlety of this watercolor technique is truly inspiring. No one need know that all that is required is the ability to ink your stamp and mist with water.

Exploring Image Transfers: Transparencies

In this third article in my series on image transfers, you'll find one of my all time favorite projects. I've admitted it before. I'm a dollar store junkie. When the canvas placemat found its way into my cart, I justified my "habit" with the knowledge that there are far worse addictions. Little did I dream that this purchase would become a treasured documentation of a vacation memory. With minimal sewing, a cute little tote was the result.

Here's the same process applied to the fabric card front. Another great photo - another great memory. An added bonus is the simplicity of the supplies: Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi Medium Gloss and Extra Time Slow-Dry Medium.

I didn’t notice when I purchased the trim that one set of beads in the middle of the section was not firmly attached. When I took the beads out of the plastic bag, the droplet fell apart. Sometimes the unexpected enables the imagination to take a giant step, and the broken beads provided that inspiration. Until then, I hadn’t realized that one of the small turquoise beads was actually a heart. The largest bead, why that could be a lantern for a little boy in search of fairies. One bead left, and I knew I would find the perfect spot for it atop a vintage ornament featuring stamps from the Oxford Impressions Fairy Sweets plate.

Exploring Image Transfers: Paint Glazes

There are times when I really wish that my photography skills were stronger, and this is one of them. The original butterfly photo was spectacular if I do say so myself, but my pictures of the butterfly card and the bird necklace don't begin to do the projects justice. Thank goodness the photographer at Crafts 'n things® doesn't share my limitations. You'll have to check out his much better pictures on pages 86 and 87 in the April 2011. First the butterfly card.

The whimsical bird necklace uses the same technique, but what a different effect. Both projects use Claudine Hellmuth Studio Paints and Gloss Multi Medium. While the butterfly was transferred to cardstock, the necklace is made with Claudine Hellmuth Studio Natural Sticky-Back Canvas. I rarely wear jewelry, but this will be an exception!

Better Backgrounds: A Twist on Bleach

I've always enjoyed working with bleach and never cease to be amazed at how two pieces of identical looking cardstock can produce completely different results. There's magic in the technique!

If you haven't seen the April issue of Crafts 'n things®, you'll not want to waste any time in finding a copy. I love the added "white space," larger photos, and easy to read instructions. It's all new in look from the cover throughout.

Beginning with this issue, Painting, The Cross Stitcher, and Pack-o-Fun have been rolled in for a larger publication. While I've never been a painter and my cross stitch days are probably in the past, I still find inspiration in these projects. Pack-o-Fun may have targeted inexpensive crafts for children, but I've often found ideas that could be adapted to a different audience by adding a sophisticated twist.

Recycling has a much nicer sound than dumpster diving. At least that’s what I claimed when I rescued this heart shaped box on the way to the landfill for the project on page 48 of the February 2011 issue of Crafts 'n things®. What better reuse than turning a box that once held chocolates into a repository for these non-traditional Valentine ATCs.

Exploring Image Transfers: Tape Transformation

Do you remember the first time that you saw heat embossing? It’s still a moment of wonder for me. I had a similar experience years ago when I first watched a demonstration of packing tape transfers. Now, when I share this technique, the reaction is always the same. People can’t believe that the process is so simple. I have to agree.

These projects are the first in a series of three articles on image transfers for Crafts 'n things®. First, a card featuring a stamp by Impression Obsession, Inc. , Hopes & Dreams. Perfect Pearls™ always provide an elegant touch.

30 Minute Card Ideas: Playful Cherub Tag and Tiers of Cupcakes

It was similar to an out of body experience. The only reason that I know that I made this card is that my name is under the picture on page 32 of the February 2011 issue of Crafts 'n things®. You wouldn't describe my stamping style as "cute," but this tiered cupcake card is cute and was fun to complete. The stamps are both by Memory Box, Tiers of Cupcakes and Sweet Cupcake, with color provided by Adirondack® Dye Ink Pads. The patterned paper is from the DeLovely Mini Deck by Cosmo Cricket.

The mischievous cherub on page 30 definitely looks more like something I would create. Tim Holtz™ Adirondack® Alcohol Inks and Alcohol Blending Solution combine with Suzanne Melvin's Oxford Impression Bonbon plate for a spirited Valentine tag.

Cupcake Presentation Box

Have you ever faced this dilemma: Is the present in the box or is the box the present? In this case, the answer to both questions is “yes.” I first saw this concept at one of my favorite places for inspiration, the local dollar store. Although the party favor was small and would only hold a tiny treat, my version, featured on page 74 of the February 2011 issue of Crafts 'n things®, is large enough for a cupcake. Slide off the closure strip and watch my box open!

After you slip off the decorative paper closure to reveal the box contents, you’ll want to reassemble the package for display. Here are two more examples.

While sturdy enough for cupcakes, this box would provide elegant packaging for any treat or treasure. The Cosmo Cricket patterned paper is part of the DeLovely Collection. I know that you'll agree these projects are lovely!

When I first saw this image from Suzanne Melvin's Fairy Sweets plate (Oxford Impressions), I was fascinated. Her look is slightly impish, and I knew that she had to find a place on our already heavily decorated tree.

The ornament box is one that I created just for this project. You can find the pattern and instructions in the December 2010 issue of Crafts 'n things® at page 50. I used some of my favorite Ranger® products: Tim Holtz™ Adirondack® Alcohol Inks and Metallic Mixatives, Tim Holtz™ Distress Ink, Adirondack® Dye Ink, and Archival™ Ink. The crystal trim provides the perfect finish.

One little ornament might be lost on our tree. I think this little angel needs some friends!

Journals of Love for Cancer Patients

When Dawn Gehring, Managing Editor of Crafts 'n Things, asked if I knew of a paper crafting project for the "Crafting for a Cause" section in the October 2010 issue, I jumped at the opportunity to write about someone I had "met" in an online art group. Shirley Nagel has a passion, and everyone she comes into contact with soon knows.

Shirley makes journals for distribution to cancer patients. Some may use the journal to organize information, record their thoughts, or even as a sketch pad. What began as a simple gift for a family member has blossomed into a ministry that blesses many.

I hope that you will pick up a copy of this issue and read Shirley's heartwarming story on page 94. If it touches you, let Shirley know.

Recipe for Fashion Kitchen Set

The memory is rather faint: a day devoted to creating a Black Forest Cake from scratch only to discover that the husband who loves chocolate and lists cherry pie as a favorite did not like any combination of the two ingredients. The days when I enjoyed experimenting in the kitchen and envisioned neatly organized recipe files have long since passed. Instead, I just needed a place to file cards of different sizes, newspaper clipping, and the bits and pieces of recipes shared by friends over the years. With that in mind, I created this recipe box and coordinating grocery list and entertainment planner for the October 2010 issue of Crafts ‘n Things.

By the Sea Journal and Trinket Box

"Recycle. Restyle. Reuse." It's even on the cover. Long before "going green" became the trend, crafters enjoyed the thrill of transforming what some would have seen as trash into treasure. Such was the case with this tin and matching journal found in the August 2010 issue of Crafts 'n Things. Who could guess that this textured vintage finish conceals primary paint colors. It's all in the products you use!

The photo images, tin trinkets, and sentiment are from the "By the Sea" plate by Oxford Impressions. For successful stamping with photo stamps, quality paper such as Inkssentials™ Gloss Paper is the key. Rising temperatures and high humidity mean summer has arrived, and summers are synonymous with vacations. While budget may limit destination, there are no restrictions on stamping adventures. You can find mine on page 89 of the August 2010 issue of Crafts 'n Things.

The automobile on my ATC luggage tag is appropriate though my travel will not include a flight to Paris. The stamps for this tag and the complimentary card are all from the Casablanca plate from Oxford Impressions. You'll need Ranger®'s Archival™ Ink and Tim Holtz™ Distress Ink Pads for this sophisticated palette.

Looking for romance? What could be more romantic than Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman? Add an ATC to a card front, and you'll be transported to Casablanca. "Just Believe." In addition to the supplies for the luggage tag, this card uses Inkssentials™ Sepia Accents™.

Better Backgrounds: Glazed Watercolors

If you've not tried the Claudine Hellmuth Studio Paints, a close look at pictures of projects from the August 2010Crafts 'n Things may provide another reason to do so. My best description is the paints are yummy. Used with Claudine's issue of Multi Medium Gloss, this technique closely resembles canvas. The missing ingredient is Adirondack® Dye Ink Pads.

First, the Butterfly Collage card. (Stamp by Outlines™ Rubber Stamp Company, Inc) This background needed no further adornment.

Or add to butterflies to the "canvas" background with stickers such as the sparkly Glitter Butterflies Peel Offs by Paper Studio.

30 Minute Card Ideas: Palm Trees and Cowgirls

My submissions for 30 Minute Ideas in the August 2010 issue of Crafts 'n Things share little in common other than stamps from Oxford Impressions. That's one thing I enjoy - the opportunity to create without the constraint of a particular theme. Another plus is that the instructions are provided on the Crafts 'n Things site. It's probably no surprise that both projects feature Ranger® products.

My first project is a "Palm Tree" tag on page 59. The stamp is from the Travel Journal plate. Color is provided by a variety of Tim Holtz™ products: Adirondack® Color Wash™, Distress Ink Pads, Distress™ Embossing Powders, and Adirondack® Alcohol Inks.You can find the instructions and an even larger photo here.

The "Always Gets My Man" card (stamp from the Cowgirl Blues plate) is a definite contrast to the tropical tag. Archival™ Ink is a standard ink for many stampers, but are you aware of the fabulous colors beyond Jet Black? The cobalt ink used here is definitely rich with coloring is provided by Tim Holtz™ Distress Ink Pads. You'll find the card on page 58, and the instructions are here.

Ooh La La Fan & Card Set

Does this happen to you? Do you ever begin with a project in mind and end up in a completely different place? This is what I'm talking about.

I'm not sure why we have what I grew up calling "funeral parlor" fans in our comfortably air conditioned church. It could be that others, like me, reminisce about similar fans they used while attending church with a grandparent, or it could be this is an effective manner to deal with changing female hormones. Either way, I originally planned to create a useable hand fan. Something happened along the way, and that fan grew into the full sized wall art project below. (And by the way, I really hope that you'll purchase the magazine to see a much better image. The photographer did a beautiful job in capturing the details including the elegant black bow.)

I'm going to blame this change in direction on Suzanne Melvin. First, her stamps were just too beautiful for me to choose just one focal image. Next, I realized that the accompanying flourishes and borders could be used to define sectional pieces. This fan definitely reminds me of a time when such fans were a necessity and life was much slower. The beautiful images from Oxford Impressions may be found on these plates: Marie Antoinette, Le Beau Monde, and French Script.

My best description for the accompanying card is "foo foo." I love the contrast between the pink feathered lady and the elegant coach. Another beautiful French lady from Suzanne.

ATCs – Beyond Trading: A Walk in the Garden

Looking for additional ideas that place your Artist Trading Card collection in the limelight? While the flowers in our garden were destroyed by recent rains, these projects from pages 62-63 of the June 2010 issue of Crafts 'n Things bring blooms to the forefront.

The three featured stamp sets are by Oxford Impressions: Country Girl, The Fairest Flower, and LeJardin. You will also need the following Ranger® products to recreate the ATCs : Inkssentials™ Gloss Paper, Archival™ Ink, Tim Holtz™ Distress Ink, Adirondack® Acrylic Paint Dabbers, and Posh Impressions Accent Pen™ The patterned paper is from the Wild Asparagus Collection by My Mind's Eye.

First, the elegant card. The window in the flower-shaped card provides a view of the underlying ATC, perfectly framed in gold.I know that the recipient of this card will treasure the beautiful flowers.

Next, the flower garland. I wish that I had the photography skills (and the proper lighting in our home) so that you could view this on the door frame in my studio. While I created five blossoms to embellish the door frame, this would easily be adaptable for a fireplace or larger area.

Below, the detail blossoms. I liked the look of the tulip flanking the children.

Better Backgrounds: Metal Effects

It may not seem romantic to some, but when my husband asks if I would like to accompany him to the home improvement store, I typically jump at the opportunity. It's bigger than any craft store I've ever seen and what an abundance of product. There's just something special about transforming a material that would typically be attached to your house into a lovely piece of art.

Two such examples of one of my latest hardware store projects may be found on page 58 of the June 2010 issue of Crafts 'n Things. As would be expected, metal and Tim Holtz™ Adirondack® Alcohol Inks provide a winning combination. Here is a close-up of the first card. Any ideas as to where you might find this metal?

The second card features an Oxford Impressions image and sentiment from the My Story plate. A change in ink colors and what a different impression.

In contrast to the metals of my imagination, here's a background with a more traditional metal finish. This "gold" has the potential to provide a base for a fine art piece.

30 Minute Card Ideas: Flowers and Fruit

Thirty minute card ideas. Don't you love that concept! What's more, you can find all the directions for these cards online in the June 2010 issue of Crafts 'n Things. All inks are Ranger® products, and both cards use stamps from Oxford Impressions. Now, a look at my two cards.

I've typically avoid coloring, but I couldn't resist the opportunity to add my own twist to these lovely flowers. The image is from the Fairest Flower, the same plate that I used in my "Walk in the Garden" ATC project this month. Definitely versatile images, and it can be fun to use your ink pads for coloring. You'll find this card on page 32 of the magazine, and the instructions are here.

If you prefer not to bother with staying between the lines, here's the project for you. In this L'Abrege card, you simply stamp and emboss over your beautiful background. The LeJardin image, another plate that I used in the "Walk in the Garden" ATC project, puts the pear and writing together for you. This card is on page 34 of the magazine, and the instructions are here.

Classically Alice Ensemble

When Suzanne Melvin of Oxford Impressions first clued me in that Disney's Alice in Wonderland would be released this month, I had a perfect excuse. Now, I had seen stamps before based on the illustrations by Sir John Tenniel from my childhood edition of the book, but I'd always resisted. That is until I saw the three new sets Suzanne recently released: Classic Alice (the one I've used here,) Illustrated Alice, and Wonderland. Projects for the April 2010 issue of Crafts 'n Things provided the perfect excuse for me to add these stamps to my collection. See what you think.

First, a spiral notebook: black and white with an accent of red. An easy look to accomplish with Archival™ Ink, Adirondack® Dye Ink, and Inkssentials™ Glossy Accents™. When the self-adhesive crystals (Prima Marketing ®) were not the color I wanted, that too was a quick change with Tim Holtz™ Adirondack® Alcohol Inks.

Next, an Alice pendant. Same basic supplies but a totally different look.

Finally, a card. Alice with an attitude. Could that be caused by the Stickles™ Glitter Glue crown?

30 Minute Card Ideas: Wonderland Inspiration

I've titled this post, "Wonderland Inspiration" because like my next post, the stamps are by Suzanne Melvin of Oxford Impressions. Suzanne has three Alice-inspired collections: Classic Alice (my favorite,) Illustrated Alice with additional Alice poses, and Wonderland for a Lewis Carroll photo stamp and other related images. The great thing about the 30 Minute Card Ideas is that the instructions are available online at Crafts 'n Things. You can find my cards on page 28 of the April 2010 issue or at the links that follow. ATCs – Beyond Trading: Eggs-actly Perfect

The common plastic egg transformed into a unique marbleized encasement - all through the magic of Tim Holtz™ Adirondack® Alcohol Inks and Metallic Mixatives. Best yet, these eggs are the perfect size to display Easter ATCs.

The first egg features ATC Duckies by Red Lead Paperworks stamped with Archival™ Ink and colored with Adirondack® Dye Ink Pads and Tim Holtz™ Distress Ink Pads to add a vintage touch.

The second egg, another stamp by Red Lead Paperworks, ATC Hello Happy Easter, was stamped and colored in the same manner as the Duckies egg. In both cases, I've attached the trim with Inkssentials™ Glossy Accents™.

Of course, I wanted to create a card to accompany my eggs. I enjoyed creating this ATC with fantasy colors. The patterned paper is from the All Dressed Up Stack (DCWV).Certainly not your typical Easter colors!

Better Backgrounds: Paint Scraping

I've always thought of my mother as a "real" artist because she worked in oils, acrylics, and watercolors. Years later, I still remember watching her coach the last bit of color from those precious tubes. She would then use the same technique that I have used below to create rich, vibrate backgrounds.

In my first card, you can see the beauty of the Claudine Hellmuth Studio Paints with no additional adornment. This is a background that can definitely stand on its own.

Next, see what happens when you add embossing with Adirondack® Pigment Ink and Christmas Tree Embossing Antiquities™. Definitely an appropriate background for this sophisticated stamp, Abundance by B Line Designs.

Memories of Roses

Wedding plans were already underway at my house, so I knew that I couldn't resist this "Happy Couple" by Judikins, You'll find two very different looks using this stamp in the April 2010 issue of Crafts 'n Things. Can you tell what product these two projects have in common?

If you guessed Tim Holtz™ Adirondack® Alcohol Inks, you're right. The metallic finish of the Silver Fanfare die cut paper (Creative Imaginations) on the card front provided a great surface for the alcohol ink and for embossing with Adirondack® Pigment Ink and black Super Fine Detail™ Powder. I love the way the pattern of the paper is visible in the unembossed areas.

The keepsake box is made using ArtEmboss Aluminum by Amaco, but you'll have to check pages 38 - 39 for details on the tools I used (as well as a much better picture!) When you do, you'll be in for a surprise, and I think you'll want to give this a try too!

Is it spring yet?

I can't speak for anyone else, but personally, I'm ready for Ole Man Winter to move on. I was reminded that there is a life beyond ice and snow when my April issue of Crafts 'n Things arrived this week. Check out the cover.

Spring is definitely blooming with all the pink flowers, but it is the chick that made me smile. I remember the anticipation as a little girl. I couldn't wait for the day when the Easter colored chicks would arrive at the local department store. (Obviously, that before we realized that dying chicks in seasonal colors was less than humane!) The table top was at eye level, and I knew that the best place to watch was near the heat lamp. My parents understood that these little fluff balls were not an appropriate pet for my stubby little fingers, but that never dampened my interest.

If you're suffering from the winter doldrums, you'll find much more in this issue than seasonal chicks and rabbits. But I must admit, I find the familiar satisfying. (It may be hard for me to resist the table runner, placemat, and napkin rings that Melony Bradley created to match the sweet little chick bucket.) Anyway you look at it, I am reminded of the promise that winter will come to an end!

Faux Metal Embellishments

Looking for sophisticated but budget friendly embellishments? You'll want to check out pages 84-85 of the February 2010 issue of Crafts 'n Things for striking examples.

At first glance, you'll think that these projects are adorned with pricey metals and their lightness may cause slight confusion. The foundation is simple and one that is in the supply closet of many paper crafters. The secret is Perfect Pearls™ and great die cuts by Spellbinders.

The first of my projects is this "Key to My Heart" card. The Distressed Floral background (Tim Holtz™ Collection, Stampers Anonymous) provides a lovely back drop for the lock and key. Both glisten in the light like the real thing.

Next, my "Illuminata Tag." The rusted effect of the die cut is the perfect enhancement for the classic Illuminata stamp (Inkadinkado®).True sophistication.

Last, but by no means least, a "Regal ATC" featuring Tim Holtz Creative Block #25 (Tim Holtz™ Collection, Stampers Anonymous.) The green patina seems to ooze from the flourish and fleur-de-lis just as it would from the real thing.

If you have never tried Perfect Pearls™, I hope these projects will encourage you to add them to your supply stash. Whether you want to include a sparkle of glitz or the impression of aged metal, you'll find a them "perfect" fit for your needs.

ATCs - Beyond Trading: I Love Lucy

When I first saw the Lucy stamps from the Stampsmith, I knew that they would fit my dollar store frame. With glitz, glitter, swirls, and curls supplied by the Filigree Heart from the Artful Stamper, this will be the perfect gift for the one in my family who "Loves Lucy." See what you think.

Now, all that I needed was a matching card. The stamped image below will bring back memories of happy hours spent together watching I Love Lucy. The Glitter Mat Stack(DCVW) provides the perfect sparkle.

30 Minute Card Ideas: Love

This was a first for me. I finally decided to take the challenge to submit a couple of projects for the 30 Minute Card Ideas section of Crafts 'n Things. Both these projects as well as other quick creations can be found on page 63 of the February 2010 issue.

The "Love Tag" employs one of my favorite color combinations, black and white with a punch of red. The elegant paper from DCWV and paper sticker made this a quick go together. (Instructions here.)

For a totally different look, try my "Love Poste." The postage collage stamp (Dawn Hauser™ for Inkadinkado®) made this another easy project. Pop dots and Inkssentials™ Glossy Accents™ give added dimension to the butterfly postage. Of course I've used my favorite Adirondack® inks. (Instructions here.)

Better Backgrounds: Faux Handmade Paper

Need a little help to get into the holiday spirit? This background technique lends itself to the glitz and glitter of the season while being perfectly adaptable to simple designs. The key to this technique is to provide a background with the tooth needed to "grab" the synthetic fibers. The thick, creamy Claudine Hellmuth Studio Paints are perfect for this. Look at how the paints and fibers enhance the sparkle of the Christmas Light stamp by Penny Black (3054K).

Below, you see the background with absolutely no embellishment. You must agree. Still gorgeous.

Better Backgrounds: Swirling Texture

Texture never bores me, and when you add the glimmer of Perfect Pearls™ to Inkssentials™ Glossy Accents™, you can create a background that is unforgettable. You'll find the details of this technique in the October 2009 issue of Crafts 'n Things. The two cards featured on page 112 are below.

First, the Believe card demonstrates the results you can achieve through an underlying layer of stamping. The stamps are two of my favorites: Block of Words (Postmodern Design) and Cracks Grunge Background (I Brake for Stamps).

Next, see the results you can achieve by adding simple embellishments like rick rack and this flower from K&Company.

Better Backgrounds: Irresistible Resist

Techniques have a way of morphing. I remember a demonstration of faux antiquing I saw years ago: white paint applied over a clear image embossed on black cardstock. Definitely shabby chic. Later, I learned a technique called kaleidoscope or Joseph’s Coat: black ink brayered over a clear image embossed on marker-colored cardstock, a similar process.

While experimenting recently, I believe I achieved a completely different look with Adirondack® Dye Inks, Adirondack® Acrylic Paint Dabbers, and Inkssentials™ Gloss Paper. Two cards resulting from my experiment may be found on page 95 of the August issue of Crafts 'n Things. Both feature stamps by Fred B. Mullett.

First, my "Wonderful Peppers" card. I think these pepper stamps are wonderful! I hope that you will click on the card to see the details. The Classic K Bailey Ornamental Rub-On (K & Company) is a perfect complement for this hot number!

Next, "Simply Shrimp." I'd admired the Lori’s Shrimp stamp and think that Lil’ Flying Fish is a nice partner. The rich colors of the inks provide a sharp contrast to the pastel paint. No further embellishment required!

Below, two cards that you won't see in the magazine and more stamps by Fred B. Mullett.

First, "Testing the Water." I wanted to use the rather large sticker (EK Success) and that required large stamps, Blue Bobo and Big Kelp. Big stamps also mean that lots of color shows through the paint. Take a peak!

Now, "Through the Window." I wanted to see how a transparency might work with this background and thought the Printables ERA Transparency by Prima fit the bill. It looks to me like the Mushroom and Ground Ivy are peaking through the window.

Altered Paper Mache Pair

I might as well admit it before someone asks.

No, the "Fairyland" box and the close-up of the lid are not the same. I thought it was packed carefully, but the elephant that must have stomped on the box crushed the wings on my precious fairy. I only redid the lid, and it turned out a little differently from, my original submission. To find pictures that match, you'll need to look in the August issue of Crafts 'n Things. Here's the original box.

Now for a closer view. Actually, I think that I like the new lid better than the first. (Next time that I go to the post office, I'll have to thank that elephant!) I never cease to be amazed at how simple charms and buttons can be used with Melt Art™ Mold-n-Pour® to form a mold for Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel™. I added highlights with Perfect Pearls™ and Stickles™ Glitter Glue.

My second altered paper Mache creation was this "Dragonfly Delight" box. Look closely and what appear to be openings in the metal lid are actually cut-outs lined with mesh wire. Coordinating colors of Tim Holtz™ Adirondack® Alcohol Inks, Adirondack® Acrylic Paint Dabbers, and Adirondack® Pigment Inks made this a quick and easy project to finish. If you're wondering about the texture on the sides of the box, that's one of my favorite stamps, the bark stamp from the Grunge Background set by I Brake for Stamps.

Inspiration: DJ Pettitt

Recently I had the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone through two mixed media workshops with DJ Pettitt. First, I would like to thank Joyce Vance for taking the time out from her very busy life to to coordinate this opportunity for all of us. Normally, my only real option for classes of this caliber has meant a day long drive to Random Arts in the Asheville area. Random Arts is definitely one of my favorite artsy places, but Birmingham is sooooo much closer. Many thanks to Joyce and her helpers for taking care of all the details to make this a fabulous experience!

The first two days were spent in a workshop entitled "Mingled Elements," a collaborate effort between DJ and Deryn Mentock. The description alone was enough to create excitement: "After creating a beautifully gilded art piece in class, we will send you home brimming with enough technique, information and inspiration to use in a wide range of artwork; from jewelry making to journals, including decorative elements that can be used in book making, assemblage, collage, altered art and everything in between!"

The first day focused on painting a face. I'm not a painter, so this was the most intense of the four days for me. DJ's focus on shapes and shadows was insightful. I don't think the world's great portrait painters need worry about competition from me, but I learned techniques and concepts that I know I will put to use in mixed media creations.

Day two was all Deryn. I found this a relaxed day. I'm neither a jewelry maker nor a wire worker, but I was enthralled with the unique framework the wire provided the portrait samples and definitely inspired by Deryn's jewelry. While I'd left a better hammer at home, I just decided to go with the one that I had and see what happened. Here's my finished creation. I was pleased with the end result and know that I have tucked away a lot of information for future use.

For days three and four, we moved on to creating an altered fabric collage book. The techniques were different (and for me, less stressful than those in "Mingled Elements. I think that the smaller face had a lot to do with that. Less for me to mess up!) Take a look at the outside of my book cover.

You can see the inside front and back below. The Battenberg lace fan had been a Christmas ornament that my mother made, a sentimental addition. I split the canvas that was originally to be the outside back cover into two pieces to create the front pocket and a decorative back strip. The flower is one that I made while playing in the wire class. I love the way the Glossy Accents make it pop.

I'm not sure how I'm going to use my book. I got rather carried away in adding color to my pages, so they're a little bright for journaling. I'm looking forward to more fun play in the future as the book determines its purpose.

Here's one last picture that I snagged from DJ's blog. That's me concentrating on my work - head down midway on the left side at the middle table. You can probably tell by looking what a fun, inspirational group this was. Thanks to DJ, Deryn, and fellow artists for four wonderful days of escape!

Fanciful Wings Project Set

I love a bargain and regularly shop the aisles of the local dollar store for crafting inspiration. When I found these glow in the dark butterflies, my mind began to race. These four projects, featured in the June 2009 issue of Crafts 'n Things, were the result.

I think that my favorite is this embossed card using Nick Bantock™ Dye Pads. I wish that you could see the beautiful sheen that the Perfect Pearls™ provide.

Here I’ve used Tim Holtz™ Adirondack® Color Wash™ for a really easy card. Such rich colors.

With added color from Adirondack® Dye Ink Pads, Color Wash™ clean-up from the card above was the foundation for this journal. Below, you can see how I incorporated mulberry paper to finish the inside cover.

I found one more use for Color Wash™ in this butterfly paper casting.

Details for constructing these cards are on pages 98-99. With a little imagination, I’m sure you’ll think of other uses for this inexpensive find.

Rubber Stamper’s Studio: Deli Wrap Journals

Have you ever had the experience of trying to locate a supply and then forgetting why you wanted it in the first place? That was the case for me with deli wrap. I knew that I had to have some, and it took me months to locate a source. By the time that the deli wrap arrived, I was scratching my head to try to remember why I ordered it in the first place.

I now know why I started the search, but in the meantime, I've enjoyed some fun experiments. I love the translucency of the deli wrap, and I was interested to see what kind of backgrounds I could create with it. The painted backgrounds (using Adirondack® Acrylic Paint Dabbers) for these journals are the result of one of my play days. These three found their way into the June 2009 issue of Crafts ‘n Things.

Here are two more.

If you are admiring the photo stamps, they are all plates from fellow Tennessee stamper, Suzanne Melvin, and her company, Oxford Impressions. (You may remember that I used Suzanne's Bird's Nest collection in creating the birdhouse and card gift set in the April issue.) The stamps for “By the Sea” and “Afternoon Tea” are from plates of the same name. The photo stamps for “Sands of Time” and the house in “Remember” are from the Family Album plate. “Invincible Summer” uses stamps from Season of Giving.

One thing that I like about these journals is that the pages can be replaced when filled by simply untying the binding and inserting new ones. If you’re really adventuresome, collect those filled pages and bind them together for a totally new book. For details of journal construction, see pages 94-95.

Better Backgrounds: Masking with Tape

You may have thought of masking tape as a standard artist supply, but have you considered using it to create your backgrounds? Look at these two cards from my Better Backgrounds column in the June 2009 issue of Crafts ‘n Things.

At first glance, I think you’d be hard pressed to say how these backgrounds were created. Tape and Adirondack® Dye Ink pads are the answer. The details are on pages 92-93.

The two great stamps, Sherrie and Sharon, by B Line Designs were stamped with a Big & Bossy™ Two-tone Embossing Pad and embossed with Super Fine Detail™ Powder. (You could achieve the same result with the newer Adirondack® Pigment Inks.) This is also a perfect background for rub-ons as demonstrated by the addition of “thanks” (Creative Imaginations) to the card stamped with Sharon’s veiled image.

Here’s an example with colors that do not overlap. (Stamps: Time Flies, Stampers Anonymous; Eternity Slab, Postmodern Design. Nick Bantock™ Dye Pads: Chartreuse, Deep Turquoise, Vermillion Lacquer, Damson Plum, Chrome Yellow.)

For a completely different look, tear your tape to create the shape of your choice. After creating the grid background with tape and Clover Adirondack® Dye Ink, I added the flower effect with tape and Wild Plum ink. (Stamp: Printer’s Mark, LaPluma; Big & Bossy™ Two-tone Embossing Pad; Bottle Adirondack® Embossing Powder.)

Between the Pages

Before I post about the projects that I have in the June 2009 issue of Crafts ‘n Things, there are three things in this issue that I want to point out. First, check out the cover. Is this not the coolest!

Earlier this year, I noticed college students wearing galoshes. I soon realized that it had nothing to do with the weather. Rather, it was a fashion statement. I’ve never paid much attention to trends, but the boots on the cover definitely grabbed my attention. Lime and hot pink have always been a favorite spring color combination for me. The added orange makes this a real color WOW. Who knows, the instructions make it look so easy. I might even give this a try and make a fashion splash. I’d have the correct footwear!

The next thing that caught my eye was a picture in the contents area. The stamps looked familiar. (After reading the article, I realized that I own but have never used the set. Anyone else do that?) I was intrigued because I couldn’t figure out what products were used. I was pleased to discover the jewelry was created by Margot Potter, The Impatient Crafter™. (Even if you’re not into jewelry or crafting, you’re bound to get a laugh out of Margot’s videos.)

Margot used techniques in the article similar to those you will find on her blog in a recycled jewelry project. Of course, I’m really partial to her “faux enameled jewelry” in Crafts ‘n Things. Stamped projects are always among my favorites. I might even pull out that unused stamp set.

After checking out the contents pages, I began my quick flip through the magazine. I like to “see” every page before I start back at the beginning to savor every word. I stopped at page 100, a pair of cards titled “Angels among Us.” My thought was, “I’ve got to tell . . . Wait a minute. I don’t need to point out these cards to Jen. Jen made them.”

I met Jen Lowe several years ago at Ranger University. Even then, her style was quite distinctive. If you ever need inspiration, check out her blog. Jen is a prolific blogger and fills each day with creativity.

I’ve mentioned my discoveries. I look forward to posting about my projects for this issue next.

Fanciful Flight Birdhouse with Card Gift Set

I was excited when I discussed this project for the April 2009 issue of Crafts ‘n Things with Dawn Gehring, managing editor. With birdhouse in hand, I envisioned stamped panels in the window openings that would match a stamped card set. When Dawn asked if the cards would fit inside the birdhouse, I remembered there had been larger houses on the top shelf at my local Hobby Lobby. With a trip back to the store, the project took on a new dimension. After removing the rope from inside the birdhouse and gluing the roof pieces together, I found that the birdhouse was a perfect repository for a 4 1/4” x 5 1/2” card set.

Now the real fun began. The patterned paper that I used, Twelfth Night from the Poetry Range by Scrapperdashery, is by my friend Judi Hodgkin. I’ve enjoyed using her papers since we met at Ranger several years ago. The stamp set, the Bird’s Nest from Oxford Impressions, is by fellow Tennessee stamper, Suzanne Melvin. Suzanne continues to amaze and inspire me with the variety of her collections and the quality of her stamps.

I guess I might as well admit it. I got carried away and couldn’t stop. When I began to create cards for the “Fanciful Flight Birdhouse” feature for the April 2009 issue of Crafts ‘n Things, I kept thinking of additional ways to use the Bird’s Nest set (Oxford Impressions) on the Scrapperdashery Twelfth Night patterned paper.

Below, you’ll find the eight cards that were not published. After creating twelve different cards, I told myself that enough is enough – even though I still had more ideas. (As with the four cards and the envelops that were published, the images were stamped with Coffee Archival™ Ink and colored with Adirondack® Dye Ink Pads.) The Bird’s Nest is definitely a versatile set. I think that my next post will prove that.

Step Up Your Stamping with Foam Stamps

In the December 2008 issue of Crafts ‘n Things, I had two projects using foam stamps: the first, a tray in which a large stylized leaf and a circle stamp were turned into vibrant poinsettias, and the second, a set of holiday cards. In the April 2009 issue, you’ll find four more cards that prove that foam stamps can be sophisticated or just plain fun.

Once again, I’ve used some of my favorite supplies – Adirondack® Acrylic Paint Dabbers (and Adirondack® Metallics Acrylic Paint Dabbers,) Adirondack® Dye Ink Pads, Perfect Pearls™, and Stickles™ Glitter Glue. Better Backgrounds: Masking with Die Cuts

Die cuts are meant to be embellishments, right? That's probably how most people use them, but I enjoy finding possibilities for product beyond the intended purpose. To find out how die cuts do double duty as masks in stamping projects, see my Better Backgrounds column in the April 2009 issue of Crafts 'n Things. Die cuts by Spellbinders are teamed with Ranger® Adirondack® Dye Ink Pads in this fun technique.

One of the things that I enjoyed was using stamps by fellow Tennessee artist Roann Mathias. ("Sing to the Lord" above; "Imagine" below) I've long been intrigued by calligraphy, and her work is beautiful. You can find more of Roann's images at the Stamping Studio. I have a new toy. I purchased a Cricut® Create after Christmas and recently added the Sure Cuts A Lot software so that my Cricut® can "talk" to my computer. Memory Tin Vignettes

There's no way around it. I'm in love and the mere thought awakens the senses. It's a simple pleasure, and one that is completely legal. I'm referring, of course, to caffeine. Tea and coffee. Either will do as long as it's strong. These three tins, featured on pages 88 - 89 of the February 2009 issue of Crafts 'n Things, celebrate that affection. What's more, they were so much fun to create.

I painted the tins with Adirondack® Acrylic Paint Dabbers and used Adirondack® Dye Ink Pads and Tim Holtz™ Distress Ink Pads for stamping and coloring the images. The yummy patterned papers are all from my friend Judi Hodgkin's Scrapperdashery Poetry Range. It was a special treat to incorporate stamps by fellow Tennessean Suzanne Melvin in two of the tins. (Her Afternoon Tea plate (Oxford Impressions) contains additional images in this fun theme.) Bits of broken jewelry, beads, lace, and real coffee beans complete these mini scenes.

Melting Pot® Valentines

Who hasn’t heard of the edgy English stamp company Paper Artsy. It’s hard for me to believe that it’s been almost five years since I first met Leandra Franich at CHA. The next year she would return as an exhibitor, and the stamping world has not been the same since.

Leandra was also a fellow “graduate” of Ranger University. In a weekend that was a whir of tips and techniques, I was fascinated with Leandra’s work and her use of Ranger products.

You may be wondering about the connection between Paper Artsy and the title of this post. When I began to consider projects for the February 2009 issue of Crafts ‘n Things, I wanted to create sophisticated non-traditional Valentines. It’s a game that I’ve always enjoyed playing, and you may too. When you look at tools, do you brainstorm about ways to use them - other than the intended purpose?

Whether it is a matter of stretching your dollars or simply challenging yourself to think “outside the box,” tools provide inspiration. While texture plates are designed to emboss paper, I’ve found it is even more fun to create backgrounds by stamping with them. Everything You Need to Know about Ink

One of the things that I always looked forward to in The Rubber Stamper was the annual ink chart. I was pleasantly surprised when thumbing through the December 2008 issue to find that Crafts 'n Things has continued that wonderful tradition. Is your ink water resistant, acid free, or fade resistance? Can you emboss? Matte, glossy, vellum, acetate, shrink plastic, wood, metal, polymer clay, porous, non-porous, fabric, leather, plastic - can you stamp on it? What about clean up? Check out pages 92 - 97 for a chart that summarizes these details for all your favorite Ranger products. How much more convenient can it get!

A Matter of Imagination

The tray had been a fixture on our porch for years, and the once rich finish showed the effects of constant exposure to the elements. When Crafts 'n Things editor Dawn Gehring suggested a Christmas home decor project, I knew this was the perfect project to repurpose a favorite piece. You'll have to check the December 2008 issue to see the tray itself, but a few swipes of Espresso paint with an Adirondack® Acrylic Paint Dabber gave the tray new life.

I envisioned big, bold flowers and leaves. Since the poinsettia stamps that I had on hand were not the size that I wanted, I turned to large foam leaf and circle stamps to create the images that I envisioned. As with the foam stamp Christmas cards, I used Adirondack® Acrylic Paint Dabbers and Adirondack® Metallic Acrylic Paint Dabbers to mix my paints right on the stamps. I believe I achieved the bold look that I had in mind!

Now for a closer look. When I think of Christmas, I think of glitter and glitz, and the fun part of the project was adding those details. Adirondack® Dimensional Pearls, Stickles™ Glitter Glue, and Perfect Pearls™ pack a glamour punch and the Inkssentials™ White Opaque Pen adds subtle accents.

As for the glass charms, Tim Holtz™ Adirondack® Alcohol Inks and Metallic Mixatives quickly transformed jewelry findings into coordinating pieces. Rather sophisticated if I do say so.

Foam Stamp Transformations

Christmas Has Arrived!

I feel like a little girl who's been waiting for Santa for a long time and his arrival is imminent. Earlier this week, I noticed that the home page for Crafts 'n Things now features the December issue of the magazine. That means that my copy of the magazine should arrive any day. (One of the advantages of a subscription: having your copy in hand before it's on the newsstand!)

I never tire of looking through holiday idea books. Although I primarily consider myself a paper crafter, there is inspiration to be found everywhere. Just look at this cover and you'll see what I mean.

I must admit that there is another reason that I'm excited. I can't wait to see my Christmas projects in print. Although I've had projects published in several issues now (since Amos Publishing acquired The Rubber Stamper,) these are the first that I designed specifically for Crafts 'n Things.

Zentangles

In the last few weeks, it seems there has been a renewed interest in Zentangles. I wrote about this art form in the June 2008 issue of Crafts 'n Things. With limited supplies, Zentangles provide an easy way for busy people to find time to be creative.

One of the hardest things can be getting started. Belinda Spiwak has a nice tutorial on her blog, and this video of a Mandela Zentangle will definitely make you want to give this a try.

Now for a few Zentangles of my own. Although there appears to be variation in their color, these were all done on the same basic white paper. The sunlight was definitely playing tricks on me today when I was trying to take pictures.

Now that you've seen how easy this is, grab that paper and pen that you already have on hand and make some marks!

A Pineapple Blessing

Pineapples have long been considered a symbol of hospitality and welcome making the pineapple stamp (Rubber Cottage) the perfect complement for this blessing sentiment (Stampabilities). This was a quick and easy card to complete with Archival™ Ink, a Big and Juicy™ Rainbow Pad, and Inkssentials™ Gloss Paper. Wouldn't this card make you feel loved!

Random Arts: Going with the Flow

I finally had the time to finish my wall hanging from the June workshop at Random Arts with Katie Kendrick. I posted earlier about my lack of experience in drawing faces, and that is probably obvious here. Katie's instructions were helpful, but do you ever have one of those days when you just want to go with what you've got?

When Katie demoed mixing flesh tones, her results were lovely. There was one problem: I hadn't brought the colors she used with me. Now, artists are most helpful people, and Katie would have shared her paints as would the people on either side of me. I was just having one of those days when I just didn't want to be bothered, so I used the colors I had. Besides, I really wanted my face to have a more earthy tone. And she does.

You may wonder why the bird and heart appear suspended. That was intentional on my part although I don't think that I could have made them look attached if I had tried. I enjoyed using my Inkssentials™ White Opaque Pen for the lettering around the heart and to highlight the outline of the bird.

I intended to cut the threads between my words but decided that I liked the way they tied the thoughts together. The picture below also shows the subtle stamping I added to the background with my Adirondack® Pigment Ink Pads.

I don't think that wall hangings are destined to become my newest passion, but this was definitely fun. I know that I will put the knowledge to use in further projects. This was another great day in Saluda!

Hotel Labels ATC Album

I like to make books but rarely use them. Generally for me, it's the process rather than the outcome, so this is a change: a project I'm really using. I've been looking forward to its publication in the August 2008 issue of Crafts 'n Things so that I could share detailed pictures.

With patterned paper as a foundation for the cover (Bo-Bunny Press Shabby Princess Collection,) take a closer look at this twist on a traditional book binding technique.

The ATCs on the cover and inside used one stamp, the Tim Holtz Hotel Collage (Stampers Anonymous.) Of course, I used some of my favorite Ranger products: Adirondack® Color Wash™, Tim Holtz™ Distress Ink Pads, and Archival™ Ink. I used Melt Art™ Mold n' Pour™, my Melting Pot®, Melt Art™ UTEE Brightz™, and Perfect Pearls™ to create the fuchsia embellishment. I think this is the perfect touch.

Inside the book, you'll find a dozen ATCs made with the same stamp. (I find it a challenge to navigate the Stampers Anonymous catalog. Check out page 9 in the Winter 2008 Supplement 8.2 to see how versatile the image is.)

Look what I made!

After two days of workshops at Random Arts with Katie Kendrick, my husband asked how many times I'd drawn faces in the past. If you don't count adding a smiley face to a stick figure, the answer to that would be never! Needless to say, this was a weekend that pushed me completely out of my comfort zone.

When I first saw Katie's whimsical dolls in the Winter 2006 issue of Cloth Paper Scissors, I was intrigued. The dolls just smacked of personality, a factor that I would learn came straight from the heart of their maker. And now, Katie was coming to Random Arts to teach.

The first workshop was listed as a mixed media wall hanging. I've done some quilting in the past, so a "no experience necessary" project to reflect on the my "quirky side" sounded like fun. (More on this later after I finish my quilt.)

The second workshop was described as "freestyle intuitive doll making" without fussy cutting or fussy seaming. I couldn't wait to find out how to use simple pattern pieces to design a doll body and completely ignored the mention of learning to "paint an original face on my creation." After all, Katie was going to provide a face for us to use if we wanted to. Although I'd packed paints and other supplies, I never thought about this again until after class began.

Katie is a self-taught artist unspoiled by the rules of a formal education. As she described her journey into art and her path to creativity, we were inspired to see where our hearts would lead our paint brushes. (The group included several professionally trained artists with others who like me had never attempted more than stick figure art.) We drew faces with our non-dominant hand, laughed, and followed her instructions for transferring our work to muslin. After learning how to create flesh tones, the work began in earnest. Katie was there to encourage and guide, seeking to provide input and assistance. Here are pictures of Katie, one of her dolls, and the face that she painted while we watched.

You would never have believed that this was a group of novices. Each doll had a distinctive personality; many were intricately pieced. Although I had brought along a box crammed full of fabric, after framing my doll's face with Turquoise Phthalo, I knew that the beaded trim and appliquéd heart were all that needed to be added to this beautiful fabric from my mother's quilting stash. Whether or not my doll appeals to anyone else, I now have a sentimental treasure. Beyond that, I enjoyed a challenging weekend. If only I lived closer to Saluda!

Random Arts: Sensory Overload

When I mentioned my visit to Random Arts earlier this spring, I was generally met with a quizzical expression. It's difficult to explain why it is truly "worth it" to spend the time and gas for a trip to Saluda, North Carolina. Granted, this spring our vacation to nearby Asheville brought us to the area, but last week end I made the journey just to take classes. My spring pictures highlighted the outside of the shop and the quaintness of the area. This trip, we'll look inside.

When you walk into the Random Arts, this is the view to your right. I think the title of this post says it all: sensory overload. In addition to the stamps you find displayed throughout the store, there are treasures tucked into every nook and cranny. Don't miss the collage bags in the lower right hand corner of this photo - color coordinated offerings: ribbons, buttons, and tidbits for the multi media artist, stamper, or scrapbooker looking for that perfect embellishment. The fabric hanging below the bags is simply luscious. In the bottom left, you'll find magical solutions to transform mesh or metals and samples to stimulate experimentation. It will be difficult to move on, but there is more to be seen.

The picture above should give you an idea of why it's easy to spend an afternoon in this relatively small shop. I couldn't resist looking in every drawer and browsing through the related books. The displays will allure you to try something new.

Below, the cash wrap is almost buried under product and samples. I've never resisted adding something to my purchase while checking out. This time, it was newly arrived bird charms.

If this sounds like a commercial for Random Arts, I can't help it. Friends share their favorite places with friends. I just wish I lived a little closer!
